On Saturday 19th October 2019 some students and staff participated in a 6 hour poem a thon in Newcastle. Charlie D, Maisie G, and Lucy M were brave enough to read in front of a crowd that included Bill Herbert, Professor of Poetry at Newcastle Uni, Eleanor Livingston, director of Stanza International Poetry Festival, and Linda France, internationally renowned winner of the National Poetry Competition! We are so proud of them. Maisie took to the stage wearing a lampshade, which Linda France loved.
It was wonderful to see the generosity and support of so many DCHS staff, who came to Newcastle in foul weather to support the students and help raise money. Amy Sidebotham even did the tombola. It was very moving to see so many colleagues and their partners. Dave Rowley read his science-inspired poems to a packed room, which was also really brave as he’s never read his poems in public before, and he went down a storm. We’ve had so many messages following the event from poets saying how amazing DCHS is, and lots of offers of free workshops in school. We’re very proud to work at DCHS and to know such lovely people.
