RELIGIOUS STUDIES GCSE

Mission Statement

Our vision together is to flourish by growing in our ability to think for ourselves and think wisely (Head); to learn to appreciate what it is like to ‘walk in someone else’s shoes’ (Heart); and to act with integrity (Hands).

We want you to:

  • Work with others, listen to each other’s ideas, and treat others with respect;

  • Have opportunities to consider your own experiences, attitudes and values as well as those of other people;

  • Develop respect for evidence and critically evaluate beliefs and practices;

  • Examine ultimate questions and reflect on what the answers to such questions might be;

  • Develop their understanding of why certain beliefs and practices are held to be right or wrong;

  • Relate to moral, religious and philosophical issues;

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of major world religions and belief systems including Buddhism, Christianity and others;

  • Reflect on the significance of interfaith dialogue;

  • Develop attitudes such as open-mindedness and respect for the evidence;

  • Examine the contribution religious and other belief systems can make to community cohesion and combating prejudice and discrimination.

Department Highlights

The Department features the Northumberland SACRE Newsletter for the ‘outstanding’ work on ‘Face to Faith’. This programme gives students the opportunity to dialogue with students of all faiths and none on issues such as ‘The Environment’; ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Spiritual Arts’ via video conference. Students can then develop arguments and make friendships via a safe website online.

The SACRE Newsletter also features school visits that the Department has organised to Places of worship in Newcastle. These visits always illicit good feedback from students who attend, demonstrating how much they learn of other cultures along with the enjoyment of discovery engendered.

The department has spawned a number of extra- curricular groups such as Amnesty International; the Christian Union; the Philosophy Club and the ‘Anne Frank Ambassadors’. The latter group is linked to the visit of a Holocaust Survivor that we host once a year for Holocaust memorial day.

We feel we make a vibrant contribution to the development of the whole person and towards preparing students for life in an increasingly global society.
