Results are always very good.
The results in 2006 were excellent with 100 % pass rate at both AS and A2 Level.
73% of students gained grades A- B at A2 Level
45% of students gained grades A-B at AS Level.
No previous knowledge of the subject is needed and the course is open to anyone who has gained the minimum GCSE requirement for entry to AS and A2 Level courses.
The Department employs various teaching methods including PowerPoint presentations, documentaries, films, quizzes, group and pair work. The teachers are committed and enthusiastic. Revision classes are held prior to exams.
The Department also runs a weekly Classics Club, where students engage in a variety of activities such as studying the Latin origins of English or scientific words, reading stories about the Greek gods and heroes and enjoying films or documentaries on an historical or mythological theme –gladiators for example.
Gifted and well-motivated students may also have the opportunity to study Latin. A current year 12 student is studying Latin as an extra-curricular subject aiming to achieve a GCSE in 2 years.
Students are encouraged to attend various trips during the year including the Sixth Form Classics Day at Newcastle University
