We believe that Business Studies offers students the chance to develop a wide range of skills that can be transported to the world of work. Students study local businesses and have the opportunity to analyse and evaluate business practice. They must research a range of activities within a business and offer their own opinions on what they find, consider what improvements could be made, and give thought to how this could happen.
Students have regular access to computers and are encouraged to take part in a student centred approach to learning by conducting their own research and providing their own opinions on how local businesses operate.
The department also offers a GCE in Politics where students get the opportunity to look at how Parliament operates, powers of the Prime Minister, the electoral system and voting behaviour within the UK and make a comparison between the US and UK political systems.
In 2006 the department achieved its best ever ‘A’ Level Business results with 93% of students achieving grades A-C.
To develop an understanding of the key functions that operate within a business and to appreciate how such functions can contribute to the success of a business.
To develop investigative skills through research.
Develop analytical skills and an ability to apply knowledge when given business problems to solve.
Develop decision-making skills, particularly where students have to evaluate business practice and make recommendations through giving their own opinions. Hopefully students will understand that no two businesses operate in the same way and the important fact is to be able to justify why certain courses of action have taken place.
We also want to encourage independent student learning within an environment of support and guidance, where students can develop an enjoyment of business education.
